Age 20, he enlisted and mustered as Private, Company F, 37th Virginia Infantry on 25 April 1861 in Glade Spring, VA.

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was listed as a deserter to the enemy at US Ford, VA on 16 May 1863. He was held at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC, then "sent North", date not known.
