Age 42, from Burr Oak, he enlisted in Company K, Seventh Michigan Infantry as Corporal on 5 August 1861 at Burr Oak.

He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

His son Oscar Giles Williams (1844-1863) was also in Company K; he was discharged for disability in January 1863 and died the same year. His widow Matilda Gordon Williams (1815-1872) was granted a Federal pension by March 1863 for herself and minor children.
