He enlisted as Private in Company B (later A), 6th South Carolina Infantry on 11 April 1861 in Summerville, SC. He was wounded at Seven Pines, VA on 31 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He returned to duty by March 1863. He was wounded three more times: on 16 November 1863 in East Tennessee, at Petersburg, VA on 15 June 1864, and at Fort Harrison near Petersburg on 30 September 1864. He was surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
