Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted as Private, Company B, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion on 2 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was exchanged on 2 October 1862 and returned to duty. He suffered a concussion in action at Chancellorsville, VA in May 1863 and was wounded in the arm at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. He was listed as Sergeant Major of the Legion by October 1863. He was captured at Sailor's Creek, VA on 6 April 1865 and released on 25 June at Newport News, VA.

After the War

He lived in Cartersville and Sandersville, GA until moving to Dublin, GA in 1887, where he owned and operated the town's first brickyard. Known as Judge Chapman, he was a justice of the peace at his death at age 74.
