He enlisted as Private, Company B, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion on 19 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was exchanged on 2 October 1862 and returned to duty. He was on furlough recovering from typhoid fever in July 1863 and transferred to the 3rd Georgia Sharpshooter Battalion, date not given. He was wounded in the left arm at Spotsylvania, VA on 12 May 1864. He was captured at Sailor's Creek, VA on 6 April 1865 and held at Point Lookout, MD until he was released on 11 June 1865.
