Before Sharpsburg

Age 19, he enlisted as Private, Company C, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion on 11 June 1861. He was promoted to 4th Sergeant by June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was mortally wounded in the right leg and captured at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. His leg had been broken and was amputated in the lower third, and he died from his wounds at the US 2nd Army Corps hospital near Gettysburg on 20 July 1863.

After the War

Originally buried on Joseph Schwartz's farm near Gettysburg, he was reinterred in Hollywood Cemetery in 1872.
