Age 21, he enlisted on 14 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in the Polk Rifles, later Company D, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 8 October and formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was listed as still in a hospital in Richmond in February 1863 with no further record until his surrender at Kingston, GA on 12 May 1865.
