Before Sharpsburg
He was enlisted as Private in the Polk Rifles, later Company D, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion, on 14 June 1861. He was appointed Sergeant Major of the Battalion on 2 August 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the foot in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was commissioned First Lieutenant and Adjutant on 12 May 1863. He was captured at Sailor's Creek, VA on 6 April 1865 and held at Johnson's Island, OH until 19 June 1865.
