Before Sharpsburg

Age 21, he enlisted as 4th Sergeant, Company D, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion on 11 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862. Chaplain Smith later described part of the action:

The firing was now fierce, but I felt that my regiment must be brought out of that pocket at all hazards, and I started to warn it, when I found it retreating ... in a broken and confused manner. One of the boys, Gus Tomlinson, in tears said: "Parson, we've been whipped; the regiment is retreating." "And none too soon either," said I , "for we are surrounded on all sides but one."

The rest of the War

He was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 17 October 1862. He was captured at Knoxville, TN on 29 November 1863 and held at Camp Chase, OH, then sent to Fort Delaware on 27 March 1864. He was released on 12 June 1865.

After the War

He returned home to Polk County, GA, was "exceptionally successful in all his undertakings", and was appointed postmaster in Cedartown in 1893.
