He enlisted as Private, Company F, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion on 1 August 1861 and was commissioned First Lieutenant on 30 January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was exchanged on 6 October 1862 and promoted to Captain on 4 December 1862. He was dropped from the rolls on 24 February 1864 for prolonged absence.
