Before Sharpsburg

Orphaned at age 10, he was raised by his maternal grandmother. On 15 March 1862 at age 17 he enlisted as Private, Company L, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was exchanged in October 1862 and was promoted to First Sergeant on 1 April 1864. He was wounded and lost a toe at the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864 and was wounded again, at Cedar Creek, VA on 19 October 1864. His arm was amputated and there is no further military record.

After the War

He died relatively young, not yet 40 years old, in 1883.
