He enlisted as Private, Company L, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion on 8 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was exchanged in October 1862 and was wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 2 May 1863, losing his right index finger. He was furloughed home in June 1863 and again in July 1864. He was captured in Georgia in August 1864, took an oath of allegiance, and was sent north of the Ohio River.
