He was wounded in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was mortally wounded in the bladder at Knoxville, TN on 29 November 1862 and died of his wound at the Middlebrook hospital near Knoxville on 13 December 1863. He was buried in the "woods near shops four miles from Knoxville."
