Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted as Private in the First Confederate infantry in early 1861 for 12 months and was discharged in March 1862. He enlisted again, as Private, Company O, Phillips' Legion Infantry Battalion on 6 May 1862.

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
