He enlisted as Private, Company K, 5th South Carolina Infantry and was commissioned Junior 2nd Lieutenant, dates not known.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by gunshot to the arm and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated briefly at a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD from 12 to 13 October, then sent on to Baltimore, MD, probably for exchange.

After the War

He survived the war but lost his arm.
