From York County, he enlisted as Private, Company E, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 26 November 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at "Boonsboro" - Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

He married Sarah Rachel Choate (1854-1897) in 1875.
His brothers William Jasper and James Monroe Faris were also in the Company. James was killed at Sharpsburg and William was also wounded at Boonsboro. Their father's name is seen variously as Samuel Faris/Faries/Faires.
