Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted in Walker County as a Private in Company H, 4th Texas Infantry on 7 May 1861 and was appointed 3rd Sergeant on 18 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was 2nd Sergeant by December 1862 and was elected 3rd (Jr. 2nd) Lieutenant on 18 July 1863. On 19 September 1863 he was wounded by a gunshot to his lower leg at Chickamauga, GA and was absent in hospitals and on leave to at least 30 July 1864. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant to date from 25 August but applied to be medically retired in September, based on the 24 July 1864 findings of a Petersburg, VA medical board.

He was captured at or near New Orleans, LA on 28 November 1864 and held at the Customs House there to 21 December, when he was sent to New Iberia, LA. He resigned on 20 March 1865 and it was accepted by CSA President Davis on 1 April 1865.

After the War

In 1890 he was a Justice of the Peace in Refugio County, TX and in 1900 was a merchant there, living with his son William and his family. He was still with them in 1910, but in Aransas County, finally retired.

He married Mary Reed in 1866 and they had a son, William Dixon Tedford (1868-1913).
