From the Chester District, SC, he was admitted as a cadet to the Citadel Academy in 1858 at age 16 and graduated in 1861. He served as a volunteer Drillmaster, CSA and enlisted as a Private in Company D, 17th South Carolina Infantry, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Boonsboro (Turner's Gap) on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
