Age 16, he enlisted as Private, Company E, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 23 November 1861 in Columbia.

On the Campaign

He was in action and probably wounded at Boonsboro (Turner's Gap) on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a Richmond hospital with a broken collarbone on 18 October 1862. He was discharged for disability from wounds on 14 December 1862.
