Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 23 year old clerk in Huntsville, Walker County, TX. He enlisted there as First Corporal of Company H, 4th Texas Infantry on 7 May 1861 and was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on 12 December 1861. He was wounded in the face at Gaines Mill, VA on 27 June 1862.

On the Campaign

Originally listed as missing in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862. "Not heard from since" and noted as "died" on the muster roll for January and February 1863.
