His service from the Roll,1 which says he was killed at Boonsboro (Turner's Gap) on South Mountain, MD on 14 September. He is not found in the Compiled Service Records for the regiment, but is listed as present at Turner's Gap (as C. Rentz) and missing at Sharpsburg (as W.C. Wrentz) on Colonel McMaster's list for the 17th South Carolina (Confederate States Army Casualty Lists and Narrative Reports, RG 109, NARA), online from fold3.
