Age 30, he enlisted as Private in Company A, 30th Ohio Infantry on 15 August 1861. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

His wife Catharine died about 1872 and his 3 children - Hattie J., age 14, Charles T., 12, and Adolph, Jr., 11, were admitted to the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphan's Home in Xenia.
