Age 19, he enlisted and mustered as Private, Company B, 30th Ohio Infantry on 30 July 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by a gunshot to the head, probably in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 19 September 1862 but died there of his wounds in the 21st.
