Before Antietam

Age 24, he enlisted as Private in Company C, 30th Ohio Infantry on 5 August 1861 and mustered into Federal service with them at Camp Chase, Columbus, OH on 15 August. He was appointed Corporal on 24 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862, and Major Hildt later reported:

Sergeant Carter, who bore the regimental color, was shot through the head near the edge of the [Otto] corn-field, and Corporal Buchanan, of Company C, bore them off.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Sergeant on 1 September 1864 and mustered out with his Company on 13 August 1865.
