Before Sharpsburg

A 23 year old farmer, he enlisted at Corsicana in Navarro County as a Private in Company I, 4th Texas Infantry on 17 July 1861. He was wounded in the arm at Gaines Mill, VA on 27 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his Company at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and was wounded again, by a gunshot to his right arm, in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, and was captured.

The rest of the War

His arm was amputated, probably at a field hospital, then he was briefly in US Army General Hospital #5 in Frederick, MD on 10 and 11 October. He was held at Fort Delaware to 13 October, then sent to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange. He was in Richmond, VA hospitals and was issued a Certificate of disability for discharge on 3 November 1862, but it was later revoked. He was furloughed for 90 days on 18 November 1862, but he did not return on time and was listed absent without leave as of 8 February 1863.
