An unmarried 19 year old farmer in Salt Springs, he enlisted as Private, Company C, 9th Louisiana Infantry on 7 July 1861 at Camp Moore, LA.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the shoulder in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He returned to duty in October 1862. He was captured near Fredericksburg, VA on 3 May 1863 and briefly a prisoner at Fort Delaware. He was exchanged at City Point, VA on 23 May 1863 and back with his Company. He was paroled at Natchitoches, LA on 14 June 1865.
