Before Sharpsburg

An unmarried laborer in New Orleans, he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 6th Louisiana Infantry on 9 May 1861 at Camp Moore, LA.

On the Campaign

He was wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at a field hospital near Sharpsburg and briefly at US Army General Hospital #5 in Frederick, MD from 10 to 11 October. He was transferred to Fort McHenry in Baltimore, paroled, and moved to Fortress Monroe, VA before being exchanged at Aiken's Landing, VA on 10 November. He was sent to a hospital in Richmond, VA and deserted from there about 1 December 1862. He may have gone to another unit.

Service from Booth.1 He was one of two John Weises in the Company; the other was Sergeant and killed at Bristow, VA on 27 August 1862. Frederick hospital detail also on the Patient List,2 as John Wise.
