Age 22, he enrolled on 5 September 1861 and was commissioned First Lieutenant, Company H, 32nd Ohio Infantry on 16 September. He was promoted to Captain on 24 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Harpers Ferry on 15 September 1862.
