Age 22, he enlisted on 26 December 1861 in New York City, and mustered as a Private in Company F, 5th New York Heavy Artillery on 27 December.
On the Campaign
He was killed by the "premature explosion" of a shell in the battery while in action on Maryland Heights near Harpers Ferry on 13 September 1862.
