Age 24, he enrolled 1 August 1862 in New York City, and mustered as 2nd Lieutenant, Company F, 5th New York Heavy Artillery the same day.
On the Campaign
He was captured at Harpers Ferry on 15 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was commissioned First Lieutenant 22 January 1864 to rank from 27 November 1863, but was dismissed from the service on 7 May 1865.
