Before Antietam
Age 30, he enlisted 9 September 1861 in Chicago, IL and mustered as Private, Busteed's Battery (Battery C, Chicago Light) on 28 September. He was transferred to Battery B, First New York Artillery on 12 November 1861 when the Chicago battery was disbanded in Washington, DC.

He was listed as a deserter at Antietam on 16 September 1862.
