Age 21, he enlisted on 24 September 1861 at Ogdensburg to serve three years, and mustered in as Sergeant, Company I, 60th New York Infantry on 30 October.

On the Campaign

He was killed by a gunshot through his side in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

His service from the Adjutant General,1 who says he was mortally wounded at Antietam and died in Frederick, MD, and Eddy.2
