Age 20, he enlisted 14 May 1861 in Canandaigua for two years and mustered as Private, Company E, 28th New York Infantry on 22 May.

He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He died of wounds, probably at a field hospital near the battlefield, on 19 September 1862.
