Age 26, he enlisted in New York City for three years and mustered as Private, Company E, 51st New York Infantry on 31 August 1861.

He was mortally wounded by a gunshot through his lung(s) in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of wounds, probably at a field hospital, near Sharpsburg on 23 September 1862. His widowed mother Hannah filed for a pension based on his service in March 1864.
