About age 18, giving it as 21, he enlisted on 28 September 1861 in Saratoga Springs for three years and mustered as Private, Company H, 77th New York Infantry on 1 October.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

His service from the Adjutant General.1 A memorial to him and his brothers Simeon and John in Malta Ridge Cemetery is on Findagrave.
There were probably 4 Rowley brothers in the 77th New York: Charles W., bugler, was discharged for disability in July 1862; Gideon M., Pvt, killed at Antietam; Simeon E., Pvt, died in Nov 1862 in Hagerstown, cause not known; and John J., Pvt, joined the regiment after Antietam and survived the war but died shortly after in July 1865.
