(c. 1839 - ?)
Home State: Texas
Branch of Service: Infantry
Unit: 4th Texas Infantry
Before Sharpsburg
He came to Texas with his family by 1846 and lived with his mother's new husband's family, the Balls, in Henderson County, TX in 1850 after his father Levi's death (1849). In 1860 he was a farm worker for Samuel Allen, his father-in-law, in Henderson. On 7 March 1862, by then 23 years old, he enlisted in Athens, TX as a Private in Company K, 4th Texas Infantry. He was appointed 3rd Corporal on 1 July 1862.
On the Campaign
He was in action with his Company at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to First Corporal on 1 February 1863 and was wounded by a gunshot to his neck at Chickamauga, GA on 20 September 1863. By March 1864 he was furloughed to Alabama due to wounds, and he was reduced to Private again and listed as overdue and absent without leave after 30 June 1864.
On 7 March 1865 he was examined by a medical board in Lauderdale, MS (his wives were born there), by which time his "right lung [was] affected" by his Chickamauga wound, and he was granted another 30 day furlough. There is no later military record.
References & notes
Service information from Davis1 and his Compiled Service Records,2 as Milton Autle, via fold3. Personal details from family genealogists and the US Census of 1850 and 1860. He's also seen as Milton Antol and (possibly) F.M. Antle.
He married Martha Allen (1843-1860) in May 1859 in Henderson County. He married again, Martha's younger sister Mary Adeline Allen (1845-1866) in February 1861, still in Henderson County, and they had a son, Joseph (c.1867-1880).
If he and "F.M. Antle" are the same person, he married for the third time, Mary Ann Moore in May 1884 in Henderson County, and lastly, Harriet J, Adams in Henderson in February 1888. So far, I have no positive evidence that he was F.M. or that he actually survived his wound and the war.
He was probably half-brother to Benjamin Ball, also of Company K.
