Age 21, he enlisted on 8 August 1861 at Forestville for three years and mustered as Corporal, Company I, 49th New York Infantry on 28 August.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the right thigh in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of his wounds at the Hoffman farm field hospital at Sharpsburg on 24 September 1862.
