Age 26, he enlisted on 1 September 1861 at New York City to serve an unexpired term and mustered as Private, Company E, 32nd New York Infantry the same day. He was transferred to Company B and appointed First Sergeant on 1 November, and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company D on 26 May 1862, to rank from 7 May.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
