Age 20, he enlisted on 25 April 1861 at Amsterdam to serve two years and mustered as Private, Company B, 32nd New York Infantry on 31 May. He was promoted to Sergeant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds in Burkittsville, MD on 18 September 1862.
