Before Antietam
On 1 May 1861, age 20, he enlisted in Gouveneur for two years and mustered as Private, Company D, 16th New York Infantry on 15 May. He was promoted to Corporal on 16 October 1861.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in the chest in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was treated at the "Stone House" field hospital on the Samuel Poffenberger farm near Sharpsburg, but died there of wounds on 12 October 1862.
