Before Antietam

Age 20, he enlisted on 15 May 1861 at Albany for two years and mustered as Sergeant Major, 16th New York Infantry the same day. He transferred to Company D on 15 May as First Sergeant and was probably appointed 2nd Lieutenant in June or July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 15 November 1862 in Burkittsville, MD. He was posthumously commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 8 December 1862 to rank from 26 June 1862, but did not muster at that rank.
