Age 19, from Poughkeepsie, he enrolled on 14 September 1861 in Kingston and mustered as 2nd Lieutenant, Company H, 20th New York State Militia (80th Infantry) on 9 October.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action, shot in the head, at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His remains were returned home and buried in February 1863.

His gravesite is on Findagrave; a new stone replaced his broken one in 1979 and was rededicated in a Memorial Day ceremony that year.
