Age 19, he enlisted in Kingston and mustered as Private, Company A, 20th New York State Militia (80th Infantry) on 23 October 1861. He was promoted to Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Smoketown field hospital, but died of wounds on 28 September 1862.
