Age 26, he enlisted on 13 May 1861 in Elmira and mustered as Private, Company H, 35th New York Infantry on 11 June. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 November 1861.

He was mortally wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 3 October 1862 in Alexandria, VA.
