He enlisted on 13 June 1861 and mustered into service as Private, Company K, 12th Pennsylvania Reserves on 10 August 1861. He transferred to Company C on 20 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 1 October 1862.
