A 28 year old weaver in Philadelphia, he enlisted in Harrisburg on 8 June 1861. He mustered into service as Private, Company D, 12th Pennsylvania Reserves on 10 August.

He was killed in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
