Age 20, he enlisted in Troy on 16 May 1861 and mustered into service as Private, Company C, 12th Pennsylvania Reserves on 10 August in Harrisburg. He was appointed Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He mustered out with his Company on 11 June 1864.
