About age 15, he enlisted in Wellsboro on 7 August 1861 and mustered into service as Private, Company E, 13th Pennsylvania Reserves on 21 August in Harrisburg. He was captured at Mechanicsville, VA on 26 June 1862 and held until exchanged, probably in August.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
