He enlisted and mustered in Carroll County, GA on 15 August 1861 as a Private in Company F, Cobb's Legion Infantry. He was promoted to 3rd Sergeant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

His service from his Compiled Service Records,1 online from fold3. His memorial is on Findagrave; he may be among the unknowns buried in Washington Confederate Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD.

He married Sarah J Carson (1840-1910) in 1856 and they had two sons - William and James, born in 1860 and 1862.

His brother Martin Harris Broom (1843-1932) was also in Company F of the Legion and may have been with him in Maryland.
