Before Antietam

A 36 year old merchant in Tioga County, he enrolled on 21 September 1861 at Wellsboro, and mustered into service as First Lieutenant, Company I, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry on 18 October in Harrisburg. He was acting Adjutant in early 1862 in North Carolina. When Colonel Welsh succeeded to command of the Brigade, Smith was assigned to his staff as Assistant Adjutant General.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
